Unit 4: Refining My Concept

After thinking about various styles in which to do this project, I've decided to go for a much more toony approach to the design which a mixture of of different elements to keep the animation interesting to the viewers.
I've decided to take inspiration from Japanese Game shows and various other snippets of games and animations.

One thing I wanted to incorporate was the interjection of explanatory animations, which can be seen in this video:

Other influences include:

Unit 2: Final Concept Updates

I decided to work on my final concept a bit more, along side the modelling, just to help me figure out light source and colouring and possible structure changes for the matte painting.

Unit 2: Final Concept Progression (Incomplete)

Okay, so more progression for my final concept, certain things are still off or incomplete, I think some more adjustments need to be made, I'm just unsure as to what those adjustments are at this moment..

Unit 2: Final Concept Progress

My final concept progress, however, I'm still struggling with what to put on the other side, my idea has changed since the original thumbnail was done and putting rockery or more detail the other side of the negative space makes the image feel very claustrophobic.
I'm also considering adding in something to show the scale of the area better? At the moment, it seems as though its could be any size.

Unit 2: Thumbnails 28 - 29

I've been trying to think about my final concept in terms of angles and what to place into the scene, the first image is one I've been working on, however, I felt as though it didn't quite capture the enormity of my Pagan Colossus. So, keeping with a similar scene, I decided to try a new angle that better suits my character and helps to portray the area in a larger scale.

Unit 2: Thumbnails 26 - 27

After experimenting with the ice cave idea yesterday, I decided to try and incorporate different environments together to see what sort of space I could come up with.

Unit 2: Thumbnails 23 - 25

First thumbnail attempting to incorporate the different aspects of my lair, perspective and environment need working on, but this was more of a practice for the negative space.

Unit 2: Thumbnails 15 - 22

Attempting to use some of the creatures I researched as inspiration for the negative space the Pagan Colossus could create in an environment, or the shape left behind when he's not there.

The ones that appealed to me more are highlighted; these ones seemed more interesting and gave me the impression more could be done with them.

Unit 2: Thumbnails 9 - 13

Whilst drawing thumbnails, I realised my designs were going stale and that I was just re-drawing the same thing over and over again. So, after speaking with Phil, I've decided to take my 'Secret Lair' in a new direction.

Unit 2: Thumbnails 1 - 8

After researching into my character: Pagan Colossus, I started to sketch down a few ideas about his lair and how it could reflect him and his backstory.
I've also started to give some thought as to what his 'Hero Prop' could be and what it's purpose is.

The final image was an experiment into the sort of colours I would look to use in the final artwork.

Final Concept: Spiral Staircase

This is a more finalised version of my Spiral Staircase thumbnail, including all the elements of feedback that I've received over the last few weeks.

The Red Room: Spiral Staircase

Thumbnails 64 - 68

Decided to try out various mirror styles to see which one has the best effect and works with the rest of the room, I found the oval mirror distorts the perspective and that the more simplistic designed frame worked better with the rest of the room.

Taking into consideration some of my feedback, I've started to add in some more objects to give the scene a sense of realism and boosted the intensity of the colours.

The Magic Shop interior has a ventriloquist dummy perched on a stool, so I decided to start playing around with silhouettes and different styles to see what to incorporate into my image

Thumbnails 55 - 56

I think I've finally got the perspective and area right for the image, but the shading and lighting went a bit off for my liking.

Also, started i proving on The Magic Shop thumbnails, but it still needs some work doing to the interior and perspective. Lighting has yet to be added in.

Thumbnails 52 - 54

Below are thumbnails for The Red Room and the Spiral Staircase, both of these scenes are from The Red Room.
Out of the 2 Red Room images, I think the second one works better from all distances, but its lost some of its creepy atmosphere that the first one has.
The Spiral Staircase is just me messing around with aspects in the scene and working on the composition a bit more.
